What is Exploratory Testing? can any one give with example(not the definition)?

Exploratory testing means a test engineer conducts testing based on available documents, through internet, discussions and also based on his past experience. For example if we are given an assignment on a topic we will finish it by surfing on net or through collecting material on that topic or by dicussing with our friends. We will explore the subject through available ways.So when test engineer doesnt have enough knowledge he will explore the ideas and conduct testing.

Exploratory testing is the technique of testing which doesn't require prior plan. Execution and design of the test case happens at the same time.. It may be in any case of testing a new task or a old one.Usually exploratory testing involves in normal testing for eg: When a tester finds a bug, she troubleshoots it a bit, both to find a simple set of reproduction conditions and to determine whether a variant of these conditions will yield a more serious failure. This is classic exploration. The tester decides what to do next based on what she’s learned so far.another case is : When the programmer reports that the bug has been fixed, the tester runs theoriginal failure-revealing test to see if the fix has taken. But the skilled tester also varies the regression test to see whether the fix was general enough and whether it had a side effect that broke some other part of the program. This is exploratory testing.other frequent case is : When the tester first gets the product, with or without a specification, and tries outthe features to see how they work, and then tries to do something “real†with the product to develop an appreciation of its design, this is exploratory testing.

On a recent project where we were implementing a service oriented architecture (for the first time on a large scale) we wanted to leverage the design of the system to test early. The plan was to have testers run local servers, get the latest complete code (after developers were done and everything was unit tested), and run component level tests based on risks identified by the test team. We would use automation and manual testing to flush out edge conditions, mapping errors, and un-captured exceptions.in this scenario what u can feel is the testers also doesn't have to stick to testcases and they can go based on their instinct and product and domain knowledge. So now if i put this is simple wordsexploratory testing is nothing but : 1.Simultaneous learning.2. test design and 3.test execution.IN other words i'm takin it very close to Agile testing. Thanks,Kunal Shekhar.
