  1. Hello dear,I am having around 10 years experience & 6 years in B'lore. I loved every part of my experience in B'lore. In fact, given an option, I would not want to go to even my native place (Hyderabad). There will be problems in every city, but I guess in most aspects, B'lore has less problems. Peaceful city. No riots. Most people here are friendly. Autos have meters (unlike Hyderabad). You will get different types of food. Options for enjoyment. Around 2,500 companies, so lot of options to make a career. On the flip side: Real-estate is costly. High traffic. Transport & roads not very good. I personally think you can join that company in B'lore, be here for 1 year and then rethink whether to go to another city/company. If you are coming from very peaceful city, you may find it a bit difficult to adjust initially, but once you get settled here, I think you will love this city.Below are my viewpoints though other people may differ. Someone must be kidding. 9.5 L is definitely very good for 5 years experience. One must be making a mistake if they don't join an MNC for a hike of 55%. Also, when you jump to next company, again you will get a hike of 30% on this current salary. So, it will be useful. (My salary was 5.4 L when I came to B'lore and I was sufficiently living with my family here.) I don't know about your East India. But B'lore has the best weather amongst all South cities. I should admit it has become 'hotter' when compared to 5 years back when it used to rain every alternate day. But I guess it's more of 'global-warming' problem and the effect of cutting trees. But still, it is the best IT city in South.Life is hectic or not depends on your company & project, and how you live your life. When you are a bachelor, I think you should experience this life also. Transport is not very good (basically because Metro is yet to be fully ready). Buses (AC & Non-AC) will be there frequently though they are crowded in office time. Ideally, you might want to depend on company transport or your own bike. The traffic is horrible (only negative point in B'lore), but which city does not have ? When I went to Chennai & Hyderabad and saw the traffic, Bangalore's traffic seemed justifiable for a big IT city.If you are not a person who enjoys in city bars every alternate day, then I would expect you to stay close to your work location. Then it will not take more than 20 minutes for travel. Definitely good option. There are accommodations right opposite to Electronics city to 10 km radius. Don't expect them to be very posh because Electronics city is in city outskirts. You may initially go for Working Men hostel, which may cost max of 6,000 Rs. After you get adjusted here, you can go for a 1 BHK which in my opinion will be 8K to 12 K. (may be u can add one more person to share that, so that it won't cost more than 6,000 Rs per person). My friend gave away his brand new 3 BHK flat for 12,000 right opposite to Electronics city. I don't expect every house owner to be so generous, but 1 BHK should not cost you more than 10,000. (Electronics city is like a small town.) Of course, within the city, it costs 14,000 to 18,000 for a 2 BHK depending on location. And, advance for 10 months is common everywhere in B'lore, though you may negotiate for 6 months advance in some places. That's why, I suggested Working Men hostel initially where 1 month advance (5,000) will be sufficient.

  5. ACCENTURE or HCL - Which one to join - Please Help

ACCENTURE : +ves: * Brand name. Higher than HCL. * Location (Bangalore). Changing companies in future will be much easier. Also best weather in Bangalore amongst all South Indian major cities. * Salary to Hand may be slightly higher than HCL. -ves: * Shortterm onsites * Layoffs (Their culture is different and they may not mind layoffs in case of any recession) HCL : +ves: * Employee First policies * Very fast growing, so personal growth may be more * More Job Security (of course, no job is 100% secure) * May be long term onsites (if preferred) -ves: * Location (Chennai). Initially difficult to survive in Chennai for non-localites due to weather & language. Once you get used to it, it will be okay. Also consider Chennai weather - u will be bheja-fried in summer * Salary to Hand may be a bit lower than Accenture. (It is the same case with all Indian MNCs) =========== Regarding career prospects, it depends more on project & technology (u get it by luck) you get into. My fresher friend in Accenture got into TESTING, where as his friends got into SAP, JAVA. =========== If I were your sister, I would choose HCL if there are no location constraints. But since she is from Andhra (I assume from your name), I think she better choose ACCENTURE. I can tell u it's far more easier (especially for Andhra women) to get accustomed to Bangalore. Outcome: If ACCENTURE placement is in Bangalore, I would go and join ACCENTURE. If HCL placement is in Bangalore, I would straightaway go and join HCL. If both ACCENTURE & HCL placement is in Bangalore, I would straightaway go and join HCL. If ACCENTURE placement is not in Bangalore, I would straightaway go and join HCL (any location). =========== let us know which one she chooses finally.
  6. From Googling: iSeries is IBM's midrange server line, designed for small businesses and departments in large enterprises. The product line, formerly known as AS/400 (still the preferred name among many long-time users ), was renamed in 2000 with the introduction of the V5R1 operating system and 800 line of servers. i5 is the latest hardware evolution of one of IBM's most widely-installed product lines. iSeries servers use IBM's Power5 microprocessors and are capable of running five different operating systems at the same time (AIX, Windows, Linux, OS/400, and i5/OS) on multiple partitions. IBM also offers p5 (or pSeries) servers for large enterprise users who want to run Unix systems or who need more scalability.
  7. TCS or Mindtree

hi rahul,I would choose TCS for various reasons.MindTree is good, but it's a medium sized company. The opportunities & brand name at TCS are much higher. Also, the number of onsite opportunities at TCS are far higher than other companies. (though Onsite primarily depends on project & client requirement.)be noted : what technologies you know does not matter in most companies. After initial training, they will decide which technology u should work (based on their project requirements.) Just because you are interested in Web Technology, they won't allocate you that.My friend (fresher) did a JAVA course and working as 'Testing Engineer' in Accenture. After training, they took some lottery to allocate people to various technologies and he got 'Testing' where as some others got SAP & J2EE.The only problem I see with TCS is that they may allocate you to any location in India after training. But MindTree's primary location is Bangalore, so you may get placement there only. btw, where are you currently ? MindTree must have offered in Bangalore. Where does TCS offer ?ps: Take home salary cannot be told, as it depends on what are the savings you show...etc but I can assure you 'take home' in all indian companies will be pathetic

  11. Confused - JAVA or .NET ?

hi garima,in my view, J2EE is surely better than .NETbut don't be under impression that .NET is useless. just because one person comments on your project, that doesn't mean .NET is unworthy. (may be, they didn't get impressed by your project)there are lot of jobs in .NET also. but nowadays J2EE jobs are more than other technologies.so, if you have time, try joining a course JAVA, J2EE and simultaneously try for job.actually, knowing any one language very well is enough for a fresher interview.but knowing two languages (JAVA, .NET) will surely help you in any interview. it will give you an 'edge' over others.which city do you stay?what is your b.tech percentage?
  12. I-Flex Or Sapient which one better to join

IFLEX brand name is much higher because of acquisition by ORACLE.I would prefer 'IFLEX' in your situation since you have no location problem.SAPIENT is also good and you can give a thought if you are inclined to Bangalore location.Which location you are currently at ??
  13. hey Merlina, just saw your post. I hope u have already made the decision. anyways I suggest to go with IBM. IGATE is also good n you can consider it, but IBM's brand name is much bigger than iGATE. when u change ur next company, the brand name matters so much. but note that my friends in IBM have varied experiences. some have liked it so much and some did not like it at all. it all depends on project & ur manager. If they are good, it will be cool. Because in IBM, most things depend on your manager's feedback on u. and IBM India is offshore development center. so most of projects may be (not sure) maintenance projects. so if u r very concerned about type of work, u may give a thought to iGATE as well. I dont know if they have good development projects, but try to enquire. Overall, i would try to go with IBM. If not, next choice of iGATE. You did not say how many years expr you have? and technology?

  15. .NET of J2EE?????

J2EE if u ask me. .NET is not bad either, but slightly lesser (for job purpose) compared to J2EE.
