What is the exact difference between the two? What is the job of a real System Admin? And what are the things a Net Admin has to do? As far as what I have seen, employers/recruiters mention in their ads, both these jobs overlap and are mixed with.

The Main Differance B/W system Admin and Network Adim as below :

Network Administrator Job Responsibilities:

• Ensure proper functioning of the network.
• Design and organize the system network.
• Assigning routing procedures and configurations.
• Maintenance of various network based servers.
• Will be responsible for network security.
• Will have to assign IP addresses to the various devices that are connected to the system network.
• Will have to take care of system settings along with printer settings.
• Will have to debug problems that are related to the network.
• Proper maintenance of the systems of the organization.
• Responsible for the purchase of new hardware for the organization.
• Setting up standard installation packages for all the systems to ensure uniformity.
• Evaluate the purchase of fresh devices.
• Ensure proper connectivity to all the end users in the organization.
• They administer network work-stations to utilize 1 or more TCP / IP or non TCP / IP protocols


System Administrator responsible :


User administration (setup and maintaining account)
Maintaining system
Verify that peripherals are working properly
Quickly arrange repair for hardware in occasion of hardware failure
Monitor system performance
Create file systems
Install software
Create a backup and recover policy
Monitor network communication
Update system as soon as new version of OS and application software comes out
Implement the policies for the use of the computer system and network
Setup security policies for users. A sysadmin must have a strong grasp of computer security (e.g. firewalls and intrusion detection systems).

system admin mainly deals with Operating system installation,mail servers installation,antivirus installation.
for system admin - MCITP certification is preferred
Network admin deals with design of network,assigning of ip address efficiently,configuration of networking devices like switch,router,firewall
for Network admin - CCNA certification is preferred
In small & medium companies both job roles will be mixed
